 On Freya Stark's ninth birthday, her aunt gave her a copy of Arabian Nights. This was, she says, "the original cause of my trouble." By the time she was thirty four, she'd become thoroughly enamored of Arab culture, learned Arabic, and begun writing newspaper pieces about the Middle East from her home in Syria. First published in 1933, Baghdad Sketches is a finely written account of her years in the region.  (4/92)
