Lewis and Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery
by Ken Burns & Dayton Duncan

On May 14, 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out from Camp Dubois near St. Louis with nearly four dozen men, headed west on the Missouri River. Sent by Thomas Jefferson, they were embarking in the nation's first official exploration into unknown spaces. They called themselves the Corps of Discovery, yet they would fail in their mission to discover the Northwest Passage, a mythical, all-river route through the mountains. Instead, their real discovery would be the land itself and the promises it held. Included in this companion volume to Ken Burns PBS documentary film are paintings, photographs, journal sketches, maps, and film images that convey the emotions, turbulent spirits, and constant surprises of the explorers.
