Clans and Tartans"Clann" is a Gaelic word that means "children", that was first used nearly one thousand years ago. The earliest example of checked or striped cloth is a fragment of two-color "dog-tooth" checked woollen fabric -- the so-called "Falkirk tartan" -- which dates from A.D. 235. The tartans, and the clans that have worn them, are synonymous with Scotland. In Clans and Tartans, the histories of several leading clans, all of them Highland, are presented. Additionally, clan lands, slogans, and plant badges are listed. A section on research will help amateur genealogists research their Scottish ancestry. Finally, each clan history is colorfully illustrated with a swatch of its own specific tartan. ZZ2916 Clans and Tartans $8.95
